Taming the TIGA

Former British Radical racing champion and Racelogic dealer, Anthony Dunn, happens to be married to arguably the fastest female racing driver in the UK. Amanda Whitaker has over 50 race victories to her name. Anthony told us how they use video and data to optimise lap-times and setups, and ensure that any disputes are cleared up!

Amanda Whitaker at CroftAnthony Dunn: “I thought I would use my new Video VBOX Lite on my wife Amanda Whitaker's TIGA SF78 Formula Ford 2000 as a means of documenting her track action – combined with an OLED display as a useful lap-timer.

“I first ran the system on an Oulton Park test – I use the separate Li-Ion battery pack to power the unit as I also use it for instructing on trackdays & need it to be portable. The battery pack seems to last for the whole day without any problems, so it’s ideal for a test day.

“The fact that the system starts & stops recording automatically is a god-send when testing; it means that if I’m out watching trackside, I don’t have to keep rushing back to the pit lane each time the car comes back into the pits to switch off the camera! The Oulton Park test was pretty much a washout day anyway, apart from the very last session in which Amanda managed to get one final drying lap – although unfortunately she got fuel surge on the exit of Druids corner – losing her a good chunk of time. When we watched it on video compared to previous laps, thanks to the onscreen speedo overlay you could see she’d lost acceleration – the speed’s not supposed to decrease on corner exit!

Anthony speaks to Amanda in her Formula Ford “I’ve also used the system when she was racing – she competed at the popular Croft ‘Nostalgia Weekend’ recently. As a local girl who usually does pretty well, she tends to attract quite of lot of media attention – to quote her she’s “not bad for a bird”! Invariably on races, we run the inset camera pointing rearwards – either to show the overtaking action – or as use of evidence if a rival does something untoward! With its TV broadcast quality, it has also been very useful to burn DVD’s for friends & family to watch – our 6 year old Nephew who’s just started karting is glued to it every bedtime!

“Unfortunately her engine was a bit down on power for the Croft weekend, but she did a great job of qualifying on the 2nd row of the grid – her best lap can be seen at this link:

“Again we could see whether it was losing speed at any particular points on the speed display. And it did make for some great track action as she spent a lot of the race defending her position due to the (lack of) engine power!”
